It’s Amazing What You Find When You Clean

Sooo….

I’m doing a ton of laundry today, right? And I open up the dryer and pull out my coat and *clunk*, out pops this:

…and I think to myself, “Hmm… That’s odd. That looks like a battery for a phone or something.”

And then…

I realize.

Batteries for phones are usually attached to…

Phones.

Uh-oh.

So, uhh… I guess it’s time for a trip to the Sprint store tomorrow. =)

Lazy Sunday

Been sittin’ here, building KDE stuff, and watching the cats work out an uneasy truce. My cat (Puff) is a 17-year-old female, I got her when I was in junior high. My roommate‘s cats are 4-year-old males. So, of course, my cat terrorizes the others. Here’s puff: …and here’s the showdown that seems to happen every couple of days now: It’s quite hilarious. Larry’s cats will slink around, afraid to move too fast for fear of getting Puff’s attention. Go granny!

The Day From Hell

Let’s just say I had a bad day yesterday, and it’s bleeding over to today.

The new mail server I put in at work is having fits. The antivirus and spam filters just randomly die. The CVS server at work was at 100% disk usage, and will continue to fill up until we find somewhere else to stage backups coming from our rack at Inflow so that we can get things on tape. I had to take the cat to the vet again for another fluid treatment (where they do the equivalent of an IV drip, but instead of in the vein, it goes inbetween the skin and muscle on her back, so she gets a 200ml hunchback for a day or so). She doesn’t like it much, although she puts up with it. The vet gave me some specially-formulated wet food to help her ailing kidneys and thyroid. She ate half of a can and then wandered around the house throwing it up. Since it’s wet food, it basically went deep into the carpet, I probably won’t get the stains completely out without a steam clean. 😛 I upgraded to the new apache-perl because my current . . . → Read More: The Day From Hell

I Killed Dracula!

So mom sent me a halloween care package. A hand-made dracula cape, and fangs. And a big plush dracula to hang up. He’s currently residing above my cube at work, in a rather crucified pose. We’re gonna put a Oculan T-Shirt on him, I think. =)

Who ARE you?

So every once in a while, I get asked, “Why is your nick Ranger Rick anyways? Isn’t that a kid’s magazine? What kind of 27-year-old loser are you? Sheesh, get a life.” Well, maybe not quite that bad (and some of those sentences weren’t even questions!), but you get the point. Anyways, I usually answer “It’s a long story.” It’s, I guess, kind of a long story, well maybe sort of a mid-length story. But I assure you, it will seem long by the time I’m done telling it. Really. So back in junior high, I really started getting into computers when I saw my friend dial up a BBS. I thought that was the coolest thing ever, you could call other people’s computers with yours, and talk to them! So I got a modem (1200 baud!), and I started calling the local BBSes. One of them was run by a guy who was generally known as “Quarex”, but had a habit of switching nicks just for the heck of it. After a while, I became a regular and eventually became a sysop on his system. I had a lot of fun with having the ability . . . → Read More: Who ARE you?

The Move Is Done

I’ve got everything on my new server at serverbeach now, things seem to generally be working. I’m sure we’ll run into a few things that need fixing, but for the most part it’s working. Yay!

If you haven’t noticed…

I’ve been a little quiet lately. I just moved to a new place — I’m renting a nice big house with my buddy Larry, and moving in and all of the little chores that come along with it have eaten all of my time. On top of that, I’ve got less than a week to get everything from my old server to the new. It’s currently served off of a SpeakEasy DSL connection in my old apartment. I love SpeakEasy — I can’t say enough good things about them, but unfortunately the new place is strategically located about 18,000 feet from the CO which means about all I can get is IDSL. Last thing I want is ISDN speeds after having 1.5/384. SO, instead I’m getting a regular residential Time/Warner cable modem and colo’ing an entirely new box over at ServerBeach. So far I’m very happy by ServerBeach’s service, and in the long term I’m better off. (This way I’ve got guaranteed power and availability and all that stuff, and faster burst speeds for the occasional Slashdotting.) It’s just a lot of work, and right when I should be unpacking. (heh) Expect things . . . → Read More: If you haven’t noticed…

So Tomorrow’s the Big Day

TechTV is coming to our office to film a spot on our company. I’m told I’ll be one of the interviewees… Wish me luck! [Update]OK, so apparently I was mistaken. They’re gonna be interviewing management. 🙂
