New Blog

As if I don’t have enough blogs….  😉

But I wanted to write about non-techie things, and I kept putting it off, because it felt kind of weird posting them to a blog that is obviously mostly about my tech adventures.  So, I’ve set up a new blog…

me.raccoonfink.com

If you feel like following it, go for it, if not, don’t. 🙂

Also, I’ve gone ahead and completely reworked my blog, and *cough* replaced it with WordPress, something I thought I’d never do. While WP has a somewhat sordid history and does require the upgrade train more often, it is easier to keep up-to-date, and appears to have a better track record more recently. I’d let the old blog software stagnate and found myself resisting messing with it more and more.

Let me know if you run into any issues. I think some old links will be busted, but google sitemap should pick up the new stuff pretty quickly, I hope.

Web Site for Raccoon Fink Music

I’ve set up a separate site for my music, since it’s a little off-topic for this blog. Major announcements will still be posted here as well, but I intend to post other news, information about releases, previews, and other things relating to my music to the other site instead.

Feel free to check out music.raccoonfink.com for all the latest happenings.

Thanks!

I’m Not Dead Yet

So I’ve been slack in posting to my blog, for any number of reasons, but I’ve been busy busy with lots of crazy stuff.

First, I’ve been spearheading the OpenNMS involvement in Summer of Code. Aside from one unfortunate incident things have been going well. I’m really looking forward to getting to know our students and seeing what they can come up with. It will be a learning experience for all of us. =)

We’re also starting to gear up towards another beta on the road to OpenNMS 1.6. We’ve already got a bunch more bugs finished off, but also plenty to do still.

If you haven’t noticed, my blog looks a little bit different. I’d been limping along with pretty much unchanged templates from upgrade after upgrade of Movable Type since version 3.1 or so. It’s a testament to their software that everything’s worked swimmingly without any major surgery for all of that time, but I’ve been itching to take advantage to the much cleaner HTML and CSS they’re using in newer default templates, and other spiffy features which I have not been able to . . . → Read More: I’m Not Dead Yet

Sorry about the RSS Feed

I finally got around to switching my blog over to point to RacoonFink.com, instead of ranger.befunk.com/blog. I’ve had the domain for some time (and have been using it for Fink e-mail) but had never gotten to updating the blog links.

Unfortunately, I noticed too late that it made RSS readers see everything as new. Please excuse the spamming, it won’t happen again. 🙂

Engage E-Begging

So in response to the people asking for a way to donate, I’ve now put up an Amazon Honor System link (which is like paypal, but I don’t have to be a “merchant” to put up a donation link).

To start with, I’m going to consider it an experiment to see if I can get the money to renew my (now defunct) ADC membership in time to help get Fink ready for Mac OS X 10.4. You need a for-pay ADC membership to get early access to the WWDC seeds (and later). For the last couple of years, I paid for an ADC membership out of my own pocket, and donated the spare seed keys to other Fink developers.

If you want to help out, just follow the link and make whatever donation you want. If you don’t, I understand; still feels a little weird to be asking in the first place. =)

[Update:]

Another developer has offered up a spare seed key, so if those of you who donated want to cancel it (you have up to 30 days to do so) feel free. If you want to . . . → Read More: Engage E-Begging

One… MILLION Hits

Since the initial slashdotting on the 30th, I’ve gotten over…

One… MILLION Hits.

Considering I got 2-3,000 a day before then, that’s pretty insane.

But cool. =)

The Move Is Done

I’ve got everything on my new server at serverbeach now, things seem to generally be working. I’m sure we’ll run into a few things that need fixing, but for the most part it’s working. Yay!

If you haven’t noticed…

I’ve been a little quiet lately. I just moved to a new place — I’m renting a nice big house with my buddy Larry, and moving in and all of the little chores that come along with it have eaten all of my time. On top of that, I’ve got less than a week to get everything from my old server to the new. It’s currently served off of a SpeakEasy DSL connection in my old apartment. I love SpeakEasy — I can’t say enough good things about them, but unfortunately the new place is strategically located about 18,000 feet from the CO which means about all I can get is IDSL. Last thing I want is ISDN speeds after having 1.5/384. SO, instead I’m getting a regular residential Time/Warner cable modem and colo’ing an entirely new box over at ServerBeach. So far I’m very happy by ServerBeach’s service, and in the long term I’m better off. (This way I’ve got guaranteed power and availability and all that stuff, and faster burst speeds for the occasional Slashdotting.) It’s just a lot of work, and right when I should be unpacking. (heh) Expect things . . . → Read More: If you haven’t noticed…
