Engage E-Begging

So in response to the people asking for a way to donate, I’ve now put up an Amazon Honor System link (which is like paypal, but I don’t have to be a “merchant” to put up a donation link).

To start with, I’m going to consider it an experiment to see if I can get the money to renew my (now defunct) ADC membership in time to help get Fink ready for Mac OS X 10.4. You need a for-pay ADC membership to get early access to the WWDC seeds (and later). For the last couple of years, I paid for an ADC membership out of my own pocket, and donated the spare seed keys to other Fink developers.

If you want to help out, just follow the link and make whatever donation you want. If you don’t, I understand; still feels a little weird to be asking in the first place. =)

[Update:]

Another developer has offered up a spare seed key, so if those of you who donated want to cancel it (you have up to 30 days to do so) feel free. If you want to . . . → Read More: Engage E-Begging

…and for those who have been asking, yes, you really can have / in your license plate in North Carolina. =)

KDE 3.2.2 in Fink Unstable

I’ve got KDE 3.2.2 released to Fink unstable (both the 10.2-gcc3.3 and 10.3 trees) now. Please let me know if you have any issues, the only known problem is sound not working still. Woot!

Happy Birthday To Me

Well, today’s my birthday, the big 2-8. Cynthia sent me some flowers to work, they’re very nice! I also got Angel, seasons 1-3 from Dad & Patty… I’ve got lots of TV watching to catch up on. =) Going out to Maggiano’s tonight for dinner, assuming I’m not too sick to go (I had a 100-something fever last night, although I’m feeling quite a bit better now.) On the subject of things you people are coming here for (grin), I’m going to be working on packaging KDE 3.2.2 for Fink, it’s due out soon. I should have some time to work on it tomorrow evening, expect checkins to experimental soon. Also, I’d talked about working on gtk-sharp, according to the I give up / Mac OS X PPC support thread on the Mono discussion list, my best bet is to wait a bit. There is someone who is starting to actively work on the OSX/PPC port; most of the brokenness is known issues and just needs some time from Miguel’s team to get cleaned up. For now I’m going to hold off on working on it and come back when they get things . . . → Read More: Happy Birthday To Me

No, I’m not dead…

Just haven’t been updating the blog recently. Things I’ve been working on:

Getting GTK# to work on Mac OS X Trying to get the KDE upgrade issues fixed up so that I can move 3.2.1 to stable in Fink. Profit!

KDE 3.2.2 is coming down the pipe very soon, I’ll probably spend a week or so getting that working once it hits the packager list.

Sunday, Medium Rare Sunday

It’s a nice lazy Sunday afternoon. My roommate and I got a grill, we’re cookin’ up burgers, and it’s a nice 66 degrees outside. I’ve got an XFree86 4.4 package working, it seems to run really nice. It’s pending inclusion in unstable after we decide how we want to handle the licensing issue. The main question now is, do we stand with the other distros in not releasing 4.4 packages so that XFree86 is more likely to unkink their licensing, or do we release anyways (since it seems like, at least, there isn’t a conflict anymore)? Also, I’ve basically got KDE 3.2.1 done now. I’m finishing up the test builds on 10.3, but I see no reason it won’t be releasable to coincide with the tarball release from the KDE folks. I’ve got my KDE/Mac toolset put back together and I’m through kdelibs in building everything again (including an update to Qt 3.3.1, I’ve gotta get packages put together and up on the KDE binary page). Things are moving along in a generally forward direction, as mom would say. I’ll keep you posted when I get new KDE/Mac binaries together and ready for perusal.

Back in Black

Well, I’m back from vacation and ready to pick up some of the threads I was working on before I left.

Big things on the plate right now:

Either package XFree86 4.4 final or backport Darwin-specific fixes to the 4.4 rc2 released before the recent licensing fiasco, depending on how we want Fink to handle such things. I have to do some looking into it first. Get the KDE/Mac stuff up-to-date with latest CVS and make sure all the patches are cleaned up to start tinkering again. Finish up fixing some upgrade issues with certain KDE/X11 Fink 3.1.x -> 3.2 transitions. ?? Profit! Share on Facebook

EWeek Article

I got interviewed by EWeek yesterday. Seems like having KOffice somewhat working is making a lot of waves. =) It’s pretty good, although he got Fink confused (calling it “Think”). Not too big a deal, although our Fink PR dude will probably kill me. Spiffy!

Time to offset the “negative waves,” Thanksgiving-style.

Since my last entry is a bit of a downer, I thought I’d post something so it’s at least not on the top of the page anymore. Thanksgiving seems a good time to make up for that. 😉 First of all, thanks to my parents for always being there, in spirit or otherwise, even when I wasn’t. (If those of you reading this know what I’m talking about, you know, if not, it’s none of your business 😉 Thanks to, well, everyone responsible, for letting me have the opportunity to not only have a job during the implosion of the tech industry, but having one I actually like. Thanks to the thousands of open-source developers that make my hobby possible, much less rewarding. And thanks to the people that say “thanks” back for the hard work that goes into Fink; that really is what keeps us going. I know that for every one person that actually spends the time to e-mail a package maintainer and thank them, there’s 10 that mean to. So to the 11 of you who appreciate Fink, I salute you. <grin> Thanks to you guys reading this blog, ’cause until you do something like this, . . . → Read More: Time to offset the “negative waves,” Thanksgiving-style.
