Working on KDE/Mac

If you're interested in helping out and/or trying to compile it, I've started putting together binary packages of the base stuff you need to get going.
I've got nice installers for Qt, "kdesupport" (a mishmash of dependent libraries) and "kde mac tools" (configure-kde and fix-osxbits.sh). If you want to give them a shot, you can get them from this page. Hopefully I'll have something more official as far as getting binaries out eventually, I've asked about getting space on ftp.kde.org for distributing stuff as it stabilizes.
There's also a package of arts up there, it doesn't work (seems that mcop's a bit confused) but you can at least use it as a dependency for kdelibs to get things compiled. I'm not going to put up any binary packages for anything newer because they're still moving targets at this point. Once there's something reasonably useful (kdeinit respawn is fixed, etc.) I'll start looking at packaging up higher-level KDE bits and applications.
[Update:] OK, there's a new link now. Thanks to Dave Schroeder at the University of Wisconsin and Rob Braun from OpenDarwin for hosting the files, I think my bandwidth would go insanely out of control if I tried to put them here. I'm sure my server could handle it, but my wallet couldn't. =)

  • I’m not a programmer, otherwise I would help out. However, what you and your team are doing is great. I think KDE’s applications are awesome, and it’s been a dream of mine to see them become native on OS X. Thanks for doing this. I think once you get a stable binary released, it will not only help OS X users, but KDE development as well. Keep up the good work!

On the hosting side, I can’t help you their, but you might try geting hosted by sourceforge. They helped me with an icon port of crystal svg I’m doing, so I’m sure they’ll help you, given that you guys are actualy doing something productive. 😉

Fantastic! Now I can stop compiling QT on my desktop ( I have a working non patched for this stuff install on my laptop). I do have one serious question though.
Where is the script where I can comment out $KDEDIR? I can fix .login and .profile for the QTDIR part but I can not remember where the KDEDIR data is stored.
The other serious question I have is: Do you know if Cervisia compiles under this? The reason is that is the CVS client I use on my machines via Fink. If it does I am in hog heaven since I understand how to use Cervisia just slightly more then the other stuff out there.
Thanks for work you have done so far.

has anyone else had a problem getting the shell script “fix-osxbits” to run? no matter what I do it keeps telling me command not found. I have tried both exec and ./ I have even tried run and open but no joy.
I have taken a look at the script and it should be working. So I am totally stymied

  • You guys rock.
    Really.
I hope Apple “gets it” with Koffice, just as they
did with khtml, and push their own office suite
with a free core (like Safari), with highly positive
    side-effects for us all.
    Your work is awesome 🙂
